Engineering Remote Full-time Senior
Senior Backend Engineer
VerifyStack $180K – $240K + equity Remote
About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build and scale VerifyStack's core fraud detection platform. You'll work on high-throughput, low-latency systems that process millions of decisions daily, designing the APIs, data pipelines, and real-time scoring infrastructure that our customers depend on.
What You\'ll Do
- Design and build low-latency API endpoints (Next.js Edge + Node.js runtimes) serving real-time fraud decisions
- Own the decision pipeline end-to-end — from signal ingestion, through multi-layer scoring, to policy evaluation and webhook dispatch
- Build and maintain the event tracking and velocity analysis subsystems backed by KV stores and Prisma/PostgreSQL
- Implement distributed rate limiting, circuit breakers, and graceful degradation for fault-tolerant operation
- Improve our audit trail, cryptographic evidence integrity verification, and compliance infrastructure (GDPR, SOC 2)
- Collaborate with the detection team on signal engineering, scoring calibration, and the feedback loop that adjusts scoring weights
- Write comprehensive tests (unit, integration, and load) and participate in on-call rotations
- Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and pair programming
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience, with at least 2 years building high-throughput APIs or data-intensive systems
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js — our entire stack is TypeScript from edge to database
- Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis / KV stores, and event-driven architectures
- Solid understanding of security fundamentals: API authentication, HMAC signing, rate limiting, input validation
- Familiarity with serverless / edge computing (Vercel, Cloudflare Workers, or AWS Lambda)
- Ability to reason about distributed systems: consistency, idempotency, retry semantics, eventual consistency
- Experience with observability tooling (structured logging, distributed tracing, metrics dashboards)
Nice to Have
- Experience in the fraud/risk/payments domain
- Familiarity with Next.js App Router and edge middleware patterns
- Knowledge of WebAssembly, browser fingerprinting, or TLS/JA3 analysis
- Contributions to open-source projects
- Experience with Prisma ORM
